Herons are exquisite creatures. Strong, patient, graceful, precise, and above all skilful. My studio is a few minutes walk to a pond that is home to a heron who is the model of this piece. I watch her pluck fish out of the water then fly away westward. She is especially beautiful when she arches her neck.

One of my favourite creations to date, a joy to discover her in this stone.

This carving is made from soapstone of predominately green and rust colours, with intense dark markings throughout. The fish is carved from a solid piece of black soapstone and balances in her beak without adhesive.

The carving is polished with tung oil and locally sourced beeswax bringing out the natural earthy colours.
